ICDM Pulse: Future-Ready or Falling Behind? The New Test for ASEAN Boards
Mind the gap. It may be getting wider.
Across ASEAN, organisations are adapting rather than retreating. Boards and Management are more aligned on strategic priorities than they were two years ago, and there is greater recognition of the importance of technology, transformation, sustainability and emerging risks. Yet our latest research reveals an important reality: recognition is not readiness. Businesses are changing faster than some of the governance practices, capabilities and boardroom structures required to lead them.
The upcoming ASEAN Board Trends 2026/2027 Report, developed with our ASEAN Institute of Directors partners and informed by insights from 334 board and management respondents across the region, asks a pressing question: Are ASEAN boards future-ready, or at risk of falling behind?
The findings point to five powerful signals emerging from ASEAN boardrooms:
1. Resilience is Becoming Reinvention
Businesses are not merely responding to disruption; they are redesigning around it. Strategy, transformation and resilience dominate current actions, while growth, business model transformation and digitalisation shape the future agenda.
2. Technology is Outpacing Board Capability
Technology and innovation now demand the greatest board attention, yet AI literacy, formal governance structures and structured capability-building remain limited. For many organisations, a capability gap is fast becoming a governance gap.
3. Same Boardroom. Different Reality.
Boards and Management increasingly agree on priorities, but they do not always experience board effectiveness in the same way. Future-ready boards will need more than alignment. They will need trust, challenge and stronger decision-making.
4. Sustainability: Intent Ahead of Integration
Sustainability has moved closer to strategy, but integration into enterprise risk management, performance measurement, accountability and value creation remains uneven. The challenge is no longer why sustainability matters, but how it shapes business decisions.
5. The Board Itself Must Transform
Future-ready businesses require future-ready boards. Renewal, succession, technology capability, diversity and continuous development are no longer governance exercises. They are strategic imperatives.
